Am I not delighted to have a section dedicated to the Traditional South Indian Classical style of music called Karnaataka Sangeetam anglicised to Carnatic music.
Karnaataka Sangeetam is the traditional music in Southern India ( Southern India contrary to popular myth is more than Madras and Madrasis. It is composed of 4 states Andhra Pradhesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and each state has its own language and script)

Vocal Music is the most common mode of rendering this style
hence the Sahityam is given preference over Swarams
Instruments are popular too Veena, Violin and Mandolin with accompaniment instruments of Mridangam, Tanpura ( for the sruti)
Instrumental music too needs to be played with the Sahityam!!
Purandaradasa is considered as the father as he formulated and structured this style of music.
Carnatic compostions are in all the 4 south indain languages as well as in sanskrit!!

Hi

First of all, welcome to the forum.. And thanks for a post on Carnatic Music.. Though many film songs have taken the priority, I am happy that carnatic music is still appreciated and given importance.. Even today, many kids starting from the age of 5 learn carnatic music.. Some of my favorites include MS, Sudha Raghunathan, Souwmya, Unnikrishnan and many more.. I always pray that classical music always gets its due recognition all over the world!!

Thanks Anuradhaji
Yes all singers you mentioned are indeed noteworthy!!
I am not sure if South Indians in India are still following tradition but yes we the NRIs do try to keep up the culture and tradition.

Yes its still followed and tats the best part :TU: Infact we have music teachers in every colony but yes, the quality of teaching has deteriorated.. It was become more commercial and very few are left who teach with atmost dedication..

Those who commercialize this hardly care about the kids and parents are more concerned about those kids just attending the classes and it doesnt matter to them if they are learning the ABC of music. Music is a vast language and we restrict ourselves to just singing in perfect shruti or scale.. Basically the actual purpose of classical music is at lose!! There is one music teacher here who visit various houses for teaching music, I would say, she herself needs a teacher  She is so bad when it comes to singing and few of her students comment that she teaches them film songs  God save them!!!

Sadly as you say Music is not for just love any more. and for those whom it is Love find it very difficult to make two ends meet!
There was this film called SHAKARABHARANAM which highlights this predicament very clearly!
there are so many musicians who live in such dire straits!
but hopefully this is only a cyclic pheonomenon and all past glory will be regained!

Ur Username first remainded me of Shankarabharanam.. Its a brilliant movie about music.. Infact Shankarabaranam, unnal mudium tambi, salangaioli and sindu bairavi are some of the classic movies with music/dance as its base.. I never get tired of watching them.. Frankly, I am not a tamil movie buff, but any movie about music, I wl watch them!!

my user name was inspired from Shanakarabharanam :TU:
SPB's play back picturised on Manju Bhargavi with back drop of Belur and halibeed temples!!
salangai oli the tamil version is a dubbed version of Sagarasangamam is it not??
Kamalhasan and Jayaprada
and Manju Bhargavi dancing to BALAKANAKAMAYA Ragam Ataana , Talam Adi , composer Tygaraja , with Kamalhasan performing parallelly in the kitchen!! even now very fresh !!

but all said and done if at all Classical music was popularised in Modern days then Shankarabharanam is the seed!!
the rendition of BROCHEVARAVERU RA NINU VINA RAGHUVARA, Ragam khamas Adi taala and Mysore Vasudevachar's compostion was one of the many highlights!

Me totally out of touch with South Indian films too!! My knowledge of them is of the Shankarabhranam era!! :D

Great discussion going on here.... I admire South Indian and Bengali families for their love of Art. Every Child learns one form of music or dance :TU:

One of my Bengali friend told me that if she doesn't learn how to sing, it would be difficult for her to get married  and I criticed it a lot, but now I think that its a good societal pressure coz it keeps the children rooted to music and dance.

I belong to this typical north indian culture where children are sent to any class that is "in" :( . Last time it was "Vedic Maths" and everyone was running after it. Don't know what is the latest craze now a days :(
