MUMBAI: Even before its release, the album ‘Inteha’ has become a first of sorts. Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh releases a brand new ghazal album after a period of 2 years. And that’s not all. The entire ghazal album will also be released on home video, featuring Jagjit Singh in a one-of-kind collector’s edition.

The album is a part of the three album deal that Big Music had signed with the king of ghazals. The first album was the path breaking Gujarati ghazal album ‘Jeevan Maran Chhe Ek’, which created a new dimension in the non-film regional language genre.

Post the success of their first collaborative album, Big music has convinced the ghazal maestro to return to his forte - the romantic ghazal – after a long hiatus. Jagjit Singh has composed and sung for all tracks, while the lyrics have been penned by a team of young lyricists - Aalok Shrivastav, Payyam Sayeedi, Faragh Rushvi, Rajendranath Rahbar, Sanjay Masoom, Amjad Islam Amjad and Naseem Ajmeri. The word “Inteha” literally means ‘extreme’. However, it has more colloquial implications to its usage which include terms like ‘limits’ and ‘boundaries’. Inteha can therefore include a diversity of expressions and variety of meanings – similar to the mesmerizing ghazals that are part of the album.

The album features six romantic tracks and two ghazals seeped in life’s philosophy. Apart from the new recordings, the project also stands out because of the unique video concept. In modern times, music genres like ghazals need to be marketed differently, especially as music becomes more ‘visual’. Keeping this in mind, Big Music is releasing the entire album on home video format. All 8 tracks in the album have been shot on video; DVDs and VCDs of which will be released next month. This format has greater relevance for the contemporary audience, and Big Music plans to exploit this distribution platform as well.

The album is a kick-start to the ‘Inteha’ tour, where Jagjit Singh will be performing across USA and Canada for the next 2 months. Big Music plans to reach out to Jagjit Singh’s die-hard fans by synergizing with these concerts. The label plans to make available the music CDs at the concert venues apart from targeting all major music retails stores across the nation.

Jagjit Singh shared his thoughts on the release, “All my fans have been asking for ‘new’ ghazals since a long
