I read 'Train to Pakistan' this sunday... its a brilliant book.... I have heard very good things about Khushwant Singh's 'Delhi' as well... Have added that to my 'Read it soon' list now...

Just finished JD Salinger's 'The Catcher In The Rye'. There's no doubt that it's a well-written and readable book which focuses on teenage rebellion, but to call it one of the greatest novels ever is surely over-rating it, in my opinion. I also know a few people who swear by this book. But if one talks of a similar genre - teenage growth pangs and angst etc - I surely preferred Anthony Burgess's 'A Clockwork Orange' (which focuses on teenage violence, to be specific)... Awaiting some opinions!

Finally read the Kite Runner... Overall an excellent book, very well-written and very moving at times. Superb characterisation and twists in the tale. Yes, there are some stereotypes and unnecessary details and occurences here and there, but that doesn't stop this from being a must-read. Will have to try 'A Thousand Splendid Sns' but will have to give it a gap of a few monthsas Kite Runner is too fresh in my mind

I have not been reading for last few days... But before that, I did read a few....
Paths of Glory (Jeffery Archer) - Liked it a lot.. It was quite different from the other JA books... In fact the book led me do a lot googling on Everest expeditions and their outcomes across times
Calcutta Chromosome (Amitava Ghosh) - Didnt like it at all... I am not too sure if Ghosh's style of writing suits science fiction at all
A Fine Balance (Rohinton Mistry) - Loved it... Wonderfully sad book... Loved the detail of narration... But its just that the end could have been lot better.. It seemed somewhat hurried and forced...
I have trying to read something in bengali for some time now, but am not progressing much for lack of time...

Did anyone else find, 'A thousand splendid suns' by Khaled Hosseini disappointing or was it only me? I loved 'The Kite Runner' and expected a lot from this book and probably that did me in! While the former gave a great description of Afghanistan prior and post the political upheavals, the latter was completely shrouded in pathos so much so that after a while i began to get depressed and wondered when the protagonist's ordeals would end!!! Thats not to say i disliked everything in the book, i quite liked some of the characters and the way the story built up but then it all suddenly went downhill for me! I guess i just expected too much from the book!
To be honest, I loved 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' too... even though I took the risk of reading it just a few days after 'The Kite Runner'. It's difficult to say which is better, but 'Suns' did move me a lot. I thought his writing style had matured and his storytelling ability was very crisp. His description of some of the Taliban's practices was very hard-hitting. Yes, there is definitely more pathos overall (the emphasis obviously was to depict the horrors of war and human conflict, and for that, it is necessary to use a large dose of pathos), but there is also some hope in the end. I feel Khaled is one of the best authors of his generation, and hope he continues this way.

Have started with the book The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Looks to be good till now.
I have always loved his books. The da Vinci Code was his bestseller though I feel Angels and Demon far better. He is not strong ever with his endings. Lets see what this book offers.
