I am seriously having a problem controlling the breathe.. We have noticed this with many contestants loosing breathe and even pro singers loose their breathe during live performances.. What can be done to control breathe.. Please advice
Yes, Pranayam is one means.. But just wanted to know if we have any other way of controlling breathe esp while singing sargams we need tremendous breathe control.. So, any other tips???
RTP - Thanks for the link.. Wow, these are some classic songs!!! There is no river here so I could go and practice.. But yes, the actual riyaz is done in the early morning so the voice really opens up..

Anu pranayam is surely the best way out.... but this breath control prob usually comes because of the wrong technique of taking breath. the first thing here u need to know is to breathe properly for singing.....most of the time when u breathe u expand the chest. thats not right..not the natural way. (watch a baby breathing...its never the chest thats expanding when he is breathing). such chest breathing tenses your larynx...puts pressure on your vocal cord.
When u are singing its your diaphragm that need to go down.....and resulting in expanding your abdomen and not the chest.
If u get the correct initiation of doing the pranayam... this can get rectified. bottom line is - u need to know the correct method of doing pranayam.....the correct method to learn to breath in, hold the breath, and then controlled release. Just following the instructions in books of doing pranayam can always result in doing it the wrong way... that too without your knowledge.

This question is best to be asked by Shankar Mahadevan, as he did breathless singing. He has a very good control on his breathe. I think, there was an interview by him recently in this forum.
