Sentyji, thanks so much. Will check out these songs at home - my office doesn't allow use of sound card Yes, Noorjehan's version of Muddat Hui's Mehmaan is a classic Have u heard Mehdi's saab's Na Ganvao Navake Neemkash. I have a recording of his when his voice sounds very young - mesmerising
Besides Iqbal Bano, some of the female Pakistani singers I love are a) Farida Khanum - While Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo is supremely popular, I love her rendition of Faiz's 'Yaad-e-ghazaal chashma' and Shakeel Badayuni's 'Mere hamnafas mere humnava' (the Begum Akhtar version of course is another trip) b) Noorjehan - But of course. Favourites would be Chandni raatein and Mujhse pehli si mohabbat c) Munni Begum d) Abida Parveen - more for her Sufi work, but some fantastic ghazals she's sung too e) Mallika Pukhraj - a lot more besides 'Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon' f) Nayyara Noor - what a melodious voice.. Favourites are Faiz's 'Tum mere paas raho' and 'Hum ke thehre ajnabi', besides 'Tuk der'
Narendraji, We have so few female ghazal singers. Ya the ladies you mentioned are powerful singers Some recommendations from my collection besides the ones you have already picked : Nayyara Noor’s Rang barsaat ne bhare kuch to and Dil mein kya kya aaye hain and an absolute must-listen is her Kabhi hum khoobsurat the... not exactly a ghazal, but what a classic ! I am not sure if its a film song ... Farida Khanum’s 1) Har simt pareshan 2) Chand nikle kisi jaanib teri zebaai ka 3) Hum bhi kya zindagi guzaar gayeand 4) Aafat ki shokhiyan hain tumhari nigaah mein. I would have picked yaad-e-ghazal too had you not already . Abida Parveen.. I was on a AB trip for over a year recently… she is an addiction. A couple from my favs are Dhoondoge agar mulkon mulkon milne ke nahin nayab hai hum and Lahu lahu hai har ek sang e rahguzar jaana. Both are fabulous. Mallika Pukraj.. I saw her on a ghazal show on Doordarshan when I was in Delhi in some 90s… she was on the show with her daughter Tahira Syed.. and they sang abhi to main jawan hoon. That’s where I heard Tahira Syed sing yeh aalam shuq ka dekha na jaaye .. and a couple others. It was truly mind blowing.
I have to look for the links for these... but here is Nayyara Noor
I remember listening to few of Iqbal Bano's songs long back but seriously it went out of mind... But now refreshed my memory.. Thanks a lot for the songs.. I really loved Moray Sayyan.. She has a divine voice for sure..
I recently picked up a CD called 'A tribute to Faiz Ahmed Faiz' by Iqbal Bano. It's on the EMI label... Brilliant stuff, and would recommend it to Iqbal Bano fans in the forum... It has the two very popular ones 'Hum Dekhenge' and 'Dasht-e-Tanhai', but doesn't have 'Na Ganvao Neemkash'. For those interested in Faiz poetry, EMI has also released
a) Masters Sing Faiz - featuring Iqbal Bano, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Farida Khanum, Nayyara Noor and Runa Laila... The same CD was earlier released as 'Hum Dekhenge' b) Nayyara Noor sings Faiz - Check out the songs 'Hum Ke Thehre Ajnabee' and 'Tum Mere Paas Raho'
