I was actually going through the Muthfurkat thread today when I discovered that Delhi-born Pakistani ghazal singer Iqbal Bano passed away on April 21 at the age of 74. May her soul rest in peace. Some of her songs have been posted in that thread. She was best known for her rendition of two Faiz masterpieces 'Hum dekhenge' and 'Dasht-e-tanhai', the former being one of the classics in revolutionary experession. Each time I hear these songs, I have to hear them at least seven or eight times - they're that haunting and appealing. Another of my favourites is 'Daagh-e-dil hum ko yaad aane lage'. There's another semi-classical piece in Megh Malhar which is just dazzling, but I am forgetting the name and will have to hunt whether I have it on CD. I have had a chance to hear Iqbal Bano live in Jaipur in 1986 at an open-air amphitheatre. I was a 23-year-old then. Unfortunately for me, my ghazal knowledge those days was limited to Jagjit-Chitra Singh, Pankaj Udhas, Talat Aziz and Ghulam Ali, besides two Mehdi Hassan songs which I adored and which were the only two songs of his I had heard at that point of time ('Ranjish hi sahi' and 'Mohabbat karne wale'). Today, I collect Mehdisaab's work, so to speak. I was impressed by Iqbal's voice and her rendition of classical nuances, but couldn't follow much. In fact I had not even heard of her before, and went to the show only because concerts didn't take place too often in Jaipur and I had a free pass. About 10 years later, I managed to get a tape of hers, and that's when I became a huge fan, hoping that she would perform in Mumbai sometime. Of course I never got the chance to hear her live again.
Narendra ji There is a surge in Iqbal Bano songs in youtube and other music sharing sites. Its iss duniyan ka dastoor ki we will surely be remembered after our death .
Thanks Narendra for the info. I had no idea she has passed away. Just now was listening to one of her video at youtube when thought of posting a thread here, and saw this one.
This is one of her ghazal which I like a lot. I have many of her songs in my collection. Ghazal is always my fav genre and I loved her ghazals a lot. We have very less number of female ghazal singer, this is a big loss.
Thanks Bhaskarji. The more saiyyanji video is not playing in this link, but I was able to catch it on youtube. The first line of More saiyyan ji resembles a Lata Mangeshkar song from Udan Khatola !
There is a Iqbal Bano version of Bhooli bisri chand ummedein, chand fasaane yaad aaye... which is an amazing ghazal. Mehdi Hassan has also sung it. I am trying to get a link to that, but cant find it anywhere. I have it in my collection. Will try to upload it to esnips if it will let me.
When I went home on Saturday, I wanted to play some Iqbal Bano songs... I had a compilation of various artistes singing Faiz, and Iqbal was represented by 'Hum Dekhenge' and 'Dasht-e-Tanhai'. Then I played an Iqbal Bano compilation released in India by Virgin Records - besides these two songs it also had 'Dagh-e-dil' and 'Ulfat Ki Naye Manzil Ko Chala' - which is one of her very popular songs but not one of my personal favourites. There was another compilation I was looking for - PIA had given out some ghazal CDs to its passengers some years ago, and one of my friends had gifted me the PIA Mehdi Hassan and Iqbal Bano compilations. I found the Iqbal Bano pack, and when I opened it, was shocked to discopver that the CD was missing. It had Iqbal's version of Ghalib's 'Muddat hui yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue', which has also been sung my Mehdi Hassan. Hope I find that CD somewhere. I haven't heard her version of 'Bhooli bisri chand umeedein' - but I did hear Mehdisaab sing it live in a private mehfil in Mumbai in November 2000, just a month before he fell ill. That was some magic.
I do have IB's muddat hui hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye huye, but the audio quality is not great. I will try to find a good version in my collection. I also recommend Noorjehan's version which is a classic.
