Associated Press Wednesday, March 04, 2009 11:05 AM (London) The city of Liverpool already has a Beatles museum and its airport is named after John Lennon. Now a local university says it is rolling out a graduate program entirely devoted to the Fab Four.
Liverpool Hope University said Tuesday that its new master's program, "The Beatles, Popular Music and Society," would give students the opportunity to analyze music and culture through the band's work.
"There have been over 8,000 books about the Beatles but there has never been serious academic study and that is what we are going to address," said Mike Brocken, who is directing the program at the university, which is in the band's hometown in northwestern England.
Brocken said students would be expected to study the Beatles' songs, stardom, hometown and cultural impact through four 12-week courses and a dissertation.
Brocken said studying the band was really a way of examining society as a whole.
"If popular music is about anything, it's about people," he said. "If we look at popular culture, it simply provides us with a very complex mirror of ourselves."

are sir Beatles to behtareen tha, what is your opinion on Pink Floyd. What do you think was the reason behind the famous split (there are many stories around but which one do you believe)?. Would like your 2 cents on their experiment with sounds as well.
Today only I will send a mail to mdroy so that she can join these discussions with you.
Pink Floyd is one of my all-time favourite groups, no doubt - specially the way they used sound and psychedelic effects. Songs like 'Money', 'Dogs', 'Time', 'Echoes' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Part 2' are examples of this. Add to that great songwriting and the trademark singing of Roger Waters, and of course phenomenal instrumenation (David Gilmour's lead guitar is a class apart, but keyboardist Rick Wright and drummer Nick Mason were brilliant themselves). The split was essentially caused by the ego hassles - with Waters gaining more control on songwriting, his rift with Rick Wright and the numerous arguments during the making of 'The Final Cut'. I recently read a biography of Floyd called 'Pigs Might Fly' by Mark Blake. It's a very detailed book, and it's updated till Wright's death last year. Two things have been brought out very well in the book - one is founder-member Syd Barrett's contribution and character, and the other is the infamous split. A must-read for Floyd fans.
