Its a tough question, but just wanted to know who is your favourite lyricist?

Mine is Gulzaar Saab and the reason is my favourite song "Mera kuch Saaman, tumhare paas pada hai" . If I ever meet him, I want to ask him what made him write this song  ? Its so simple, its like a prose yet so poetic.

How can I forget songs of Masoon - Lakdi ki kaathi, Huzoor is tarah and Tughse naaraz nahin zindagi :TU: :star: :star:

I was very unhappy that Gulzaar Saab didn't get his due and Javed saab had all the stardom . But Kajrare changed it for Gulzaar saab and now he is also getting his due :TU: .

I love the lyrics of Beedi, Namak Ishq also.....

In the new generation, I have started liking Prasoon Joshi. Songs of Saawaria, Fanaah and TZP are class apart. Correct me if I am wrong about lyricist of Saawaria.....

PS : Anu, I think spelling of this forum is incorrect......one R is missing

Yes, I corrected the spelling a day ago... My fav are both Gulzaar and Javed Akhtar.. I love Javed's auto biography Tarkash.. You must read it in Hindi and you will just fall in love with his way of writing.. Gulzaar sahab also has the magic in his pen.. And about Prasoon Joshi, I completely agree with you..

BTW - he was the lyricist of Saawariyaa.. He did Rang de basanti, TZP and not sure wat other movies..

I will pick up his autobiography next time when I am in India and shall read the hindi one....
Of all the new lyricists....Prasoon comes as an exceptionally talented guy.

@ Anu - Any idea if the tune is made first and then lyrics are written or is it other way round?

Here u go.. U dont need to buy a book.. Its available online  Easy for ppl like u and me..

Ritu - Im not very sure which is the order followed.. But I know that for situational songs, lyrics is written first.. Like the song Maa of TZP, lyrics was written first and music scored later.. But for certain peppy numbers, music is scored first and lyrics written later..

My all time fav lyricist is Gulzar......nobody to beat his style/way of writing(in my opinion).....And his lyrics/way of penning is always so hatke :)

my favs of Gulzar saab
1) hazar raahein mud ke dekhi -thodi si bewafai
Fav lines - bringing out the irony of the situation beautifully

badee wafaa se nibhaayee tum ne, humaaree thodee see bewafaee

2) mera kuch saaman- ijaazat ...just luv the entire song :D
btw,it is said that when "Gulzar saab gave him the lyrics mera kuch saamaan, he threw away the sheet saying, 'next you'll give me the headline of Times Of India and tell me to tune it,"

3) ek tha bachpan -aashirwaad

favourite lines(beautifully expressing the relationship between a father and daughter in just 3 lines-one incident) :-">

tehani par chadhake jab phool bulaate the
haath usake vo tehani tak na jaate the
bachapan ke nanhe do haath uthaakar vo phoolon se haath milaate the

4)Tujhse naaraaz nahin zindagi-Masoom

fav lines-

Jeene Ke Liye Socha Hi Nahi Dard Sambhaalne Honge
Muskuraye To, Muskuraane Ke Karz Utaarane Honge
Muskuraoo Kabhi To Lagata Hai
Jaise Hothhon Pe, Karz Rakhaa Hai

5) chod aaye hum woh galiyan-maachis

again i almost luv the entire song-tough to pick fav lines here

jahan tere pairon ke kamal gira karte the
hanse to do gaalon mein bhawar pada karte the
teri kamar ki bal pe nadi muda karti thi
hansi teri sun sunke fasal paka karti thi...

jahan teri edi se dhoop uda karti thi
suna hai us chaukhat pe ab shaam raha karti hai

describes beauty in sucha simple and yet awesome manner....not the typical comparisons to the moon & flowers ...but something hatke..and the antara depicts the the sadness of separation in just two lines in such a touching manner

6) do diwane sheher mein -gharonda
the entire song of do diwnae depicts the dream of two lovers beautifully..picking two lines

jab taare zameen par chalte hain akash zameen ho jaata hai
us raat nahin phir ghar jaata woh chand yehin so jaata hai
pal bhar ke liye in aakhon mein hum ek zamana dhoondhte hain...

7) aane wala pal -golmaal
Ek baar waqt se,lamha gira kahin,
Wahan daastan mili,lamha kahin nahin
Thoda sa hasake, thoda sa rulake,Pal yeh bhi janewala hain

8)Humne dekhi hai-khamoshi

Fav lines – describes love so beautifully

Pyar koi bol nahin pyar awaaz nahin
Ek khamoshi hai sunati hai kaha karti hai
na yeh bujhti hai na rukti na theree hai kahee
noor ke boond hai sadiyon se baha karti hai

9) dhaage tod lao- JBJ
The whole song sounds so romantic-esp the first two lines

Dhage tod lao chandi se noor ke
ghunghat hi bana lo roshni se noor ke
sharma gayi jo aagosh mein lo
sanson se uljhi rahe meri sansein

10) dum dara dum dara- Guru

Fav lines
Tere bina chand ka sona khota re
Peeli peeli dhool udave jhoota re
Tere bina sona petal tere bina keekar peepal
Aaja kate na ratiya
